  • Rock Hill Winery
Don DuPont, raised in Sonoma County, spent decades working as a contractor in Napa and Sonoma Counties, involving himself in the construction of many regional wineries. As he worked, he discovered a passion for viticulture and began to dream of one day building and running his own winery. In 2009, he moved to Placer County and discovered a ranch in Loomis Basin blessed with rich, volcanic soil and a hundred feet of dry, stacked rock walls. It was, however, badly in need of repair, and that called to him. The rest is history: that space, nestled in Placer Country's Sierra Foothills, would soon become Rock Hill Winery. It took Don and his family three years to convert the property for wine production, just enough time for their 7,000 bench-grafted vines to spread roots, making Rock Hill one of the largest vineyards in the county. Today, the vineyard grows nine grape varietals, which evoke the special character of the local soil and produce world-class wines.

  • La Huaca Restaurant
La Huaca Restaurant's chefs prepare elegant presentations of Peruvian cuisine in a sleek space outfitted with imaginative decor. Waiters hustle dishes of citrus-infused ceviche made with fresh fish, shrimp, or octopus past shelves of glass jugs filled with rainbow-hued liquid, and carry glasses of Peruvian wine to tables set along a wall of knotted ropes. The pachamanca tres carnes pairs a medley of slow-cooked chicken, beef, and pork with Andean tubers and a Peruvian corn cake, and the lomo saltado seasons pieces of filet mignon with a sauce made from pisco, a South American brandy made with grapes too bold to become mere jelly. The smooth-tasting liqueur also makes its way into the dessert menu and steeps into the rich layers of the tres leches sponge cake.

  • Winery by the Creek
The Sierra Nevada Mountains don’t just make for beautiful vistas—their lower slopes also play host to some of the region’s best grapes. Winery by the Creek and Charles B. Mitchell Vineyards, nestled in the foothills, harvests the vines and transforms them into nuanced, award winning varietals, such as Black Muscat. The winery plays host to a slew of other regional wines as well, including Splashdown’s Zinfandels and Charles B. Mitchell’s award-winning grand reserve. As Dionysian evangelists, the winery’s staff hosts tasting events, many of which are held on the patio by the creek that overlooks the mountains. For a peek behind the scenes, you can spelunk into the onsite wine cave where the wines are aged. There, you can sip their way through candle-lit futures tastings, sampling up-and-coming wines right from the barrel.
