  • Kid City
Imaginations blossom at Kid City. Though it has a small bounce house, most of the 3,000-square-foot space is geared toward pretending. Kids push miniature carts through the supermarket, filling them with fruits and veggies before checking out at an actual cash register. They then head to the playhouse to stock the fridge and fire up the grill for a make-believe feast. Rideable plastic cars whisk children from the playhouse to the dress-up boutique, where they can see what it's like to wear a fireman's outfit over a princess gown. Meanwhile, toddlers play safely in a padded area with colorful toys. As dedicated as Kid City is to sparking kids' creativity, its staff is equally concerned with accommodating parents. Afternoon or summer-morning drop-off camps, for example, help parents find time to run errands or invent a method for removing tomato-sauce stains from ceilings. During camps, kids do arts and crafts or enjoy visits from their favorite characters, such as cartoon princesses. Open-play hours offer complimentary coffee and tea to caretakers, and a refrigerator and microwave is at their disposal for snacks or lunches.

  • Abbey Farms of Marmion Abbey
facet: Main type: Traditional locale: en_US title: Abbey Farms of Marmion Abbey facet_type_id: 79aa20a0-5f39-1032-afee-203a74fb7076 html_text: |- For more than 50 years, the monks of Marmion Abbey have tended 300 acres of farmland. They started with Christmas trees, and now maintain 120 acres of pines, spruces, and firs that smell exactly like car freshener. On the remaining acres, they tend pumpkin vines and corn mazes, interspersing these areas with scenic groves. Throughout the year, the monks open their land to the public. In the autumn, they host Pumpkin Daze, a harvest festival with tractor wagon rides and a petting zoo. Around mid-November, they grant access to their tree farm, supplying visitors with rental saws for you-cut trees and bellowing "Timber!" just like Paul Bunyan did when he fell into bed at night. The monks stock their farm store with family-friendly products from local artists and handcrafted goods that complement the season, such as caramel apples in the fall.

  • CoCo Key Water Resort
Contained entirely inside a 60,000-square-foot arena, CoCo Key Water Resort keeps its air temperature at a constant 84 degrees to complement its tropical-themed attractions. A trio of four-story waterslides dares bare feet forward, before the calm waters of the winding Coconut Grove Adventure River calmly buoy them. Parrot's Perch interactive play island and Coral Reef Cavern activity pool reel in splashers with an interactive hanging net and a tipping bucket, eschewing less popular activities, such as maritime trade negotiations. Guests can also pursue ample on-land activities in an indoor-outdoor spa or navigate 10,000 square feet of prize games at the Key Quest Arcade. In an effort to lessen energy consumption, visitors must bring their own towels, though staffers organize and provide supplies for children's birthday parties.

  • CPX Sports
facet: Main type: Traditional locale: en_US title: CPX Sports facet_type_id: 2c04e0d0-5f37-1032-af5f-a1f5c76175eb html_text: |- A hailstorm of paint projectiles rains down upon CPX Sports' more than one dozen fields, each of which poses different challenges and requires specialized tactics. The crown jewel of the park is the Town of Bedlam, a massive maze of small-town 1950s buildings that jut out between streets dotted by paint-splattered cars and streetlights. There, snipers poke their heads out of the central city hall's tower as the opposing team hides out or checks for abandoned shampoo samples inside the post office. The Jungle of Doom drops teams into a heavily wooded field to vie for control of a central temple, and chromatic combatants weave between desiccated cars in the Wastelands, attempting to collect the most gas cans. A full pro shop outfits players with markers, protective gear, and Sesame Street coloring books for target practice. In the newly-built indoor paintball facility, meanwhile, combatants can compete on an over 35,000 square-foot field no matter how bad the weather outside is. The location also features private rooms for birthday parties, or corporate outings for effective team-building exercises that don’t involve gluing the marketing staff to people in sales.

  • Odyssey Fun World - PARENT
Odyssey Fun World's attractions aren't confined to its 45,000 square feet of indoor games and rides; they also sprawl across 11 acres in the fresh air. Inside, a ferris wheel, bumper cars, and a roller coaster host both kids and adults, and more than 250 arcade games and a laser-tag arena foster friendly competition. The indoor Gamers Lounge allows youngsters to practice their PS4 and XBox One skills, while kids up to 10 years old fling themselves into ball pits, slip down slides, or dispute the physics behind make-believe-ore extraction in tunnels at the four-story Exploration Adventure play structure. The Tinley Park location also boasts an Odyssey Fun Farm from September 27 through November 1. The farm, which is located across the street from the main park, includes a pumpkin patch, corn maze, and a 5-acre courtyard filled with activities such as pig races and a petting zoo. Outside, at the Naperville location, the staff keeps the Kidz Adventure Park's inflatable bounce houses and slides properly puffed. At the Tinley Park location, they pretend to manicure the faux turfs of two 18-hole mini-golf courses, including one that's wheelchair accessible. Their bumper boats encourage friendly jostling, but the speedboats, limited to drivers aged 16 and older with a driver's license, are all about crossing the finish line first. As trips down the zipline peak adrenaline and appetites, Chipper's Cafe counters hunger with pizza, wings, and burgers.
