What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
Steve Berger found a passion in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo and mixed martial arts.
His stint in the UFC led him down a pathway to coaching where he eventually opened his own school for future fighters and those who simply wished to practice Jiu Jitsu for self defense and to get in shape.
What do you love most about your job?
Every day is a new day, from helping the kid who got bullied at school, to the police officer who wanted to learn to better protect themselves or the regular guy or girl who wanted a more exciting way to get in shape...my days are exciting and fulfilling.
The multitalented team of instructors, which includes trainers certified in Agatsu Kettlebell and Commando Krav Maga, helps to strengthen hearts, bodies, and minds during self-defense, fitness, and fight courses. Instructors lead beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels of kettlebell fitness, a class that incorporates fundamental swings, cleans, snatches, and Turkish getups to simultaneously work several muscle groups at once.
The team also helps to build endurance by leading participants through Latin dance steps in Zumba and through a tapestry of kicks and punches in cardio kickboxing. Additionally, trainers helm courses in krav maga, a form of martial arts designed to increase confidence, protection, and Bruce Lee comparisons. Following a functional warm-up, instructors run through drills to teach students how to escape from chokes and disarm an opponent using lighting-quick pressure and weakness-point attacks.

Though students at Fit or Fight's gym are only required to wear standard workout clothes and a mouthpiece, they might sometimes find themselves sporting MMA gloves, shin guards, and hand-wraps. That's because, in keeping with its name, the studio places almost equal emphasis on exercise as it does self-defense skills. This doesn't mean that students are required to fight—rather, the gym provides much of its training to boost strength and endurance or make users more intimidating if they ever run for public office. The studio offers 12 programs, ranging from general fitness—such as Zumba and cardio kickboxing—to intensive sessions in no-gi jujitsu, boxing, and MMA wrestling for youth or adults.
In every program, clients are encouraged to work at their own pace while training as much as possible both on and off the mat.
