  • Blue Cross Arena
The Rochester Americans trace their roots back to the 1956?57 AHL season, when they entered the league with a bang by advancing all the way to the Calder Cup championship. They ended up losing the series to the Cleveland Barons, but their fast start did, indeed, portend future success; in a stunning spell of dominance, Rochester won three Calder Cups from 1964?68, losing in the championship series in 1966?67, the one season they failed to capture the title. The Amerks seized Calder Cup glory again in 1983, 1987, and 1996 for a total of six championships. Today, the Amerks remain one of the league?s most storied franchises, having spent most of their 32 seasons as the AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres.

  • Kour Magic Gymnastics Center
Gymnastics have always been part of Sasha Kourbatova's life. She started competing when she was 6 years old and trained with a very accomplished coach—her own mother. Sasha's mom Maria won two Olympic gold medals while competing on behalf of the USSR, and she shared her skills with her daughter. When Sasha stopped competing, she decided to open Kour Magic Gymnastics Center. She invited her mom and dad—also a gymnastics coach—along, and together they train a new generation of gymnasts. Sasha works with all the young kids who come through, and even includes parents in the workouts during Mommy & Me classes. Maria heads up the gym's competitive teams, which let kids test their skills against others. They teach students from 18 months to 18 years old, providing consistently scaling challenges and encouragement along the way.

  • Live Nation
More than half a century ago, three partners raised a vibrant, multicolored tent on an underdeveloped industrial site and established the Westbury Music Fair. It followed its first production, The King and I, with a decade of top-name talent and Broadway musicals. Then, recognizing its place on the theater scene was permanent, it planted its roots as a fully enclosed theater-in-the-round. Expanding its repertoire to match its new digs, the theater showcased performers such as The Who, Bruce Springsteen, and Julie Andrews. Today, past a lounge blazing in purple and red lights, guests find that same circular stage hosting equally great musical acts, musical theater, and competitive musical chairs.

  • Moscow Ballet
Nearly a century ago, the Hippodrome opened as a combination movie palace and vaudeville theater, spending more than 70 years hosting big names such as Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra. Following a double-decade period of slow business and bad hairstyles, the Hippodrome closed down in 1990. Now, however, after an exhaustive restoration project that reanimated the theater’s chandelier-lit arches, the mural above the proscenium stage, and the grand-theater boxes that hearken back to opera’s heyday, the Hippodrome reopens to the delight of Baltimore’s cultural landscape.
