  • Rochester International Auto Show
Ford introduced its groundbreaking Model T in 1908. That same year, a group of automobile dealers in Rochester organized the city's first auto show. Indeed, it was a banner year for the budding automobile industry, and people all over the country longed for the chance to experience cars up close rather than through panes of glass at the zoo. For Rochesterians, the inaugural auto show gave them that chance. Today, more than a century after it cruised into existence, the Rochester International Auto Show still gives attendees an opportunity to see motor vehicles they've never seen before. Year after year, it showcases models from basically every manufacturer, including those that haven't even been released yet. What's more, the show regularly unveils some of the industry's most innovative advances, including alternative-fuel vehicles and smart cars that have no trouble with high-school-level algebra.

  • Aerial Arts of Rochester
As if composed of liquid, William D'Ovidio, the co-owner of Aerial Arts of Rochester, cascades down from the ceiling of his studio, unraveling the bright fabric that keeps him from touching the ground as he performs one of his graceful aerial-silks routines. Along with a troupe of certified instructors, he leads circus arts classes for all experience levels inside his bright, yellow-walled space. He watches as students of all ages soar through the air, swinging on hoops and trapeze, as instructors correct form and a field of marshmallowy mats cushions occasional falls and provides a mid-class sugar boost. D'Ovidio and his instructors aim to create a community of soarers and circus-lovers, also offering circus-themed birthday parties for children and aerial yoga classes for students aged 13 and older.

  • Kour Magic Gymnastics Center
Gymnastics have always been part of Sasha Kourbatova's life. She started competing when she was 6 years old and trained with a very accomplished coach—her own mother. Sasha's mom Maria won two Olympic gold medals while competing on behalf of the USSR, and she shared her skills with her daughter. When Sasha stopped competing, she decided to open Kour Magic Gymnastics Center. She invited her mom and dad—also a gymnastics coach—along, and together they train a new generation of gymnasts. Sasha works with all the young kids who come through, and even includes parents in the workouts during Mommy & Me classes. Maria heads up the gym's competitive teams, which let kids test their skills against others. They teach students from 18 months to 18 years old, providing consistently scaling challenges and encouragement along the way.

  • Joke Factory Comedy Club
Of all the positive things that have led Joke Factory Comedy Club to succeed, two may be the most potent: the regular lineups of local and nationally touring standup talent at all four of its locations, and the sheer moxie of veteran comic Artie Fletcher, sometimes called "New York City's Bad Boy of Comedy". The latter of those two helped nurture the venue's capacity to host the former, prompting popular southern comic Eddie Caylor to dub the Joke Factory "the little club that could and did." Joining the extant Joke Factories in Indiana, North Carolina, and Florida, the Rochester branch (located inside a Holiday Inn) allows Fletcher to introduce acts from around the country to the local audience, visitors to town, and hotel enthusiasts.
