Yacht Sylvia is a 56-foot, 35-ton staysail ketch designed in New Zealand by naval architect John Alden. Launched in 1973, the yacht has circumnavigated the globe on multiple occasions, survived hurricanes, and now ferries passengers and students to remote destinations. The below-deck interior features a maritime museum with artifacts from around the world displayed on the bulkhead and countertops. Sailing lessons range from two-hour tours and explanations of basic sailing techniques to three-week immersive trips abroad during which participants learn as they perform crew duties. In addition, Yacht Sylvia Sailing can host charters for up to six to international destinations including the Channel Islands and the Sea of Cortez.

What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
San Diego Bay Bluewater Charters owner Brad Marlett discovered the joy of sailing in 2012. As a San Diego native, he grew up surfing and swimming at many of San Diego's beaches. Always looking West and wondering what it might be like to sail in one of the many boats gracing the waters just offshore.
What do you love most about your job?
This is a great business to be in. Smiling happy people soaking up the California Sunshine. It's really great to be able to share this experience with other people, teach them about the various places around the bay, or provide an offshore sailing experience with the California coast as a backdrop.
Duffy of San Diego creates high sea adventures through boat rentals and food and wine cruises. Named in CityBeat Magazine's Best of San Diego 2014. Adventurers aboard rentals and cruises have 360-degree views and may encounter ocean creatures such sea lions, local and migratory birds, and on occasion, dolphins. All adventurers are also protected by a Surrey top and crystal-clear window enclosures that can be raised or lowered depending on the weather.
The trained crew leads cruises aboard quiet Duffy electric boats, commanded by a licensed USCG captain. These cruises come complete with a full bottle of wine or non-alcoholic beverage and a charcuterie board. Each couple or group have their own private mahogany table and seating area with satellite radio onboard to help relax and enjoy the calm waters of Mission Bay.
Duffy of San Diego also transforms customers into captains by renting out their Snug Harbor Duffy electric boat. The Snug Harbor accommodates up to eleven adventurers and comes with built-in cooler, stereo, and auxiliary cord, allowing seafaring adventurers to enjoy their favorite tunes on their voyage.
