Addison Gallery of American Art
Since 1931, the Addison Gallery of American Art has nestled on the campus of an elite prep school: Andover’s Phillips Academy. However, despite its Harvard-like environs, it’s a radically inclusive space: admission is free, as are the educational opportunities. Below, some highlights, beyond the philosophy that art is for everyone.
Size: more than 17,000 art objects, dating back to the 18th century
Eye catcher: Petah Coyne’s Untitled #765, an intricate, all-white hanging sculpture that critics often compare to a chandelier
Permanent exhibits: paintings from Edward Hopper (of Nighthawks fame), Georgia O’Keeffe, and Jackson Pollock
Don’t miss: the 7,500+ photos, which chart photography’s evolution from invention of the camera to the present day, where people sign their checks with selfies
Housed within the antiquated Amos Blanchard House and Barn Museum, the Andover Historical Society preserves artifacts and archival records from Andover’s storied 350-year history. Within the more-than-100-year-old building, visitors can experience what it was like to live as a middle-class family in the early 19th century or peruse the vast library archives. The society also hosts events within the community, including the seasonal Tree Time display and lectures on the town’s history.
For those that appreciate the finer things, be sure to explore the artwork at North Andover's The Museum of Printing.
