  • CrossFit 425
After playing as the starting running back for the University of Washington—and contributing to the team's 2001 Rose Bowl victory—Braxton Cleman began a career as a personal trainer. Two of his then-clients, Bill Plummer and his wife, told him about a new workout they'd discovered called CrossFit. Braxton went with them, tried it out, and loved it. He started using CrossFit techniques in his clients' workouts as well as his own, and soon, he saw his clients improving faster than he'd ever seen them improve—and he was hitting personal bests he hadn't achieved since his football days. Inspired by his success, Braxton, Bill, and a group of friends banded together to open CrossFit 425. Trainers Braxton and Brent Davidson (also a professional personal trainer) tap into about three decades of combined experience as they lead groups through CrossFit's varied workouts. Their experience has helped earn a nod from Evening Magazine, which named the program Best CrossFit in Western Washington. The trainers time each workout to foster a "spirit of camaraderie and competition," said Bill, adding that in the end, "you're competing against yourself." Every day there's a new routine, which Braxton and Brent thoroughly explain before groups get to work jumping rope, lifting kettle bells, and pretending to ferry wealthy spice merchants across moats with the rowing machine. All CrossFit workouts are "scalable," Bill said, recalling a member who could only do one pushup when she started coming about a year and a half ago. Today? "I'm sure she could do well over 100," he said.

  • Crossfit Bellevue
Spread across 17,500 square feet of training space and a 5,000 square foot indoor turf field, CrossFit Bellevue's huge equipment cache ensures that members have the ability to challenge themselves within a safe and supportive environment. But just what kind of equipment are we talking about? Try two indoor sprint tracks, 21 regulation-size lifting platforms, ropes, rings, bars, and medicine balls. Yet with all those options, safety remains the key priority for the coaches—including former members of the armed services and competitive athletes—who monitor each student's technique to help minimize injury risk and maximize effectiveness. These CrossFit workouts emphasize the importance of functional exercises that mirror the kinds of movements people use in everyday life, such as running, jumping, climbing, lifting, and throwing. With the help of kettlebells, free weights, sandbags, and other objects, trainers can teach people of all fitness levels how to scale the load and intensity of each exercise. It's that extra level of care and individualized attention that helps keep members feeling confident and motivated as they work toward their fitness goals.

  • CrossFit West Seattle
Every human body may be unique, but the basic patterns of our muscles and skeletons are almost universal. The fitness science of CrossFit relies on that uniformity in each of its exercises, which are designed to help bodies function better in ten different domains of fitness. If that sounds like a lot of learning for a workout regimen, don’t worry. In addition to leading vigorous exercises, the coaches at CrossFit West Seattle act as stewards of CrossFit knowledge. They slowly familiarize beginners with the terminology, techniques, and equipment required to navigate CrossFit’s workouts. In fact, they require that all new students complete a series of fundamentals classes before joining the regularly scheduled sessions or hanging out in the evening to play catch with barbells. But students are not merely challenged; instructors also motivate and reward students for their hard work, and the group setting fosters a team-like atmosphere.

  • Rainier Health & Fitness
Equipment: kettlebells, barbells, pullup bar, rings, medicine balls, jump ropes Students should bring: Water bottle and towel Average class length: 60 minutes Number of Staff: 1–5 people Class location: Mix of indoor and outdoor classes Established: 2013 Registration required: Yes Good for beginners: Yes Guests allowed: No Parking: Parking lot Pro Tip: Dress comfortably, be ready to move and have fun in a positive environment with others getting fit. In 2005, Sili Kalepo and a friend started working out in an old warehouse; it was their solution to the complete lack of neighborhood gyms in Rainier Beach. Fortunately, the space suited their style of exercise pretty well, their programs caught on, and they started a gym. They became part of the non-profit Urban Impact, striving to promote healthier lifestyles in the community. Time treated them well, and in 2013 they relocated to a brand new facility on the ground floor of the Emerald City Commons, with their CrossFit program taking over the space next door. These days, workouts incorporate a variety of agility, strength, and endurance training techniques. The routines can get pretty intense, but the trainers are on-hand to monitor maneuvers and ensure participants stay healthy. "We believe that all people have a threshold that is safe for their bodies to handle," says the CrossFit trainer. "All workouts can be modified to your intensity level and ability."
