$79 for Five-Hour Competition BBQ Cooking Class ($175 Value)

During five-hour Competition BBQ Cooking classes, novice grillers gather together for tutelage from accomplished barbecue chef Jim Modesitt, who infuses modernized San Francisco barbecue with old-school Southern influences. The chef takes students through the basics of cooking meats in grills and barbecue smokers, helping them to master firing up embers with wood, charcoal, and bottle rockets. Pupils learn to how to flavor protein cuts with injections, dry rubs, sauces, and marinades before digging in to their finished products, which may include baby-back ribs, pulled pork, and shrimp. Classes run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and a currently scheduled session takes place on Sunday, June 10—additional classes will be added. Check the schedule for the current line-up.

Big Jim's BBQ

Big Jim’s BBQ entrances diners with a menu of tempting contemporary and barbecue cuisine arranged by chef Jim Modesitt. Like the annual westward migration of wood-smoking grills, the sauce-slathered bill of fare unites gourmet California treats with rustic southern cooking traditions, pairing juicy pulled pork, chicken, ribs, and brisket with hearty risottos, traditional cornbreads and beans, assorted cheeses, and crostinis. As clients sup on the tasty bounty or enroll in courses to learn the dark arts of cookcraft from the kitchen’s professional chefs and caterers, rich flavors and aromas lavish the nose and palate with a sensory celebration of fine food.

The Groupon Guide to: Famous Hats

Every historical figure of any significance wore a now instantly recognizable hat, synonymous with their name:

  • The Napoleon Hat: Military bicorn, worn side to side or "athwart" to serve as a better perch for enlisted falcons
  • The Benjamin Franklin Hat: Small brass beanie with a large conductive spire jutting out of it, topped with a small eyelet for tethering a kite
  • The Davy Crockett Hat: Famously a strict vegetarian, Crockett's "coonskin" was actually just a matted blob of reeds and buffalo chips that he moistened hourly from his canteen
  • The Hercules Hat: Just a minotaur skull

Honorable Mention: Jughead's "hat" from the Archie comics is actually a crown (?) made of gray paper (?) with miscellaneous shapes affixed to it. Details remain vague because it is proven that overscrutinizing Jughead's hat makes you go insane.

Which historical figure had the most famous hat? The answer may surprise you.
