While we love this place and frequent it regularly, it's old, tired and needs an overhaul. The overall appearance is dirty and tired. The last two times it was less than par -- overcooked burger -- I ALWAYS rave about how good they are and how they ALWAYS cook them as ordered, this last time (12/23) not so much. Then on 12/27 we went in for dinner and I ordered pulled chicken – it wasn't pulled -- it was more like cut off the bone (it was all dark meat) and drowned in BBQ sauce to hide the fact that it wasn't really "pulled" chicken -- we know what their pulled chicken is because we’ve ordered it many times before and a family member recently married and that was the meal at their wedding. I think it goes back to the I think they need to update everything -- it's all old and tired, maybe even the cook!! The service, however, is always friendly and attentive. We will be back, because we do love it, but they really need to do something about the appearance -- since we are long-time customers, we know it's been quite a while since they've done any kind of renovation. If I had never been there before the other night, I would not go back. Many times, we order our food to go or delivered because we don't like the atmosphere of the restaurant or its cleanliness. The tables are old and because of that get sticky and are hard to clean. The restrooms are dark, dank and dirty. Having worked in food service, I'd be afraid to see the kitchen and what shape it's in if the dining room is in such a mess. Again, we love the manager and staff and most of the time the food is great, but I’ll reiterate that the place needs a good overhaul. It’s a money maker, but none of the money is being put back into the store to keep it fresh and interesting.

From Our Editors

When Dean Lavallee opened the first Park Avenue BBQ in 1988, he had one lofty mission in mind: to serve the best barbecue ever made. Despite the seemingly impossible nature of his goal, he and his team continue to rise to the challenge, dry-rubbing their meats to smoke and char-grill on-site. They use all-natural, grain-fed, domestic pork for their traditional and Carolina-style barbecue pork—pulled by hand—and only use fresh, never-frozen ribs that are smoked daily over hickory. As diners chow down on hearty homestyle sides, seafood platters, or buffalo wings tossed in one of six sauces, they can admire the dining room's pictures of their city's most prominent people, places, and robot mayors.

Park Avenue BBQ arranges their meats into fun, hearty dishes such as the Dempublican sandwich, which combines smoked pork and beef brisket separated only by cheese and bacon to create a sizeable sandwich that the team has dubbed "porkalicious". They whip up Funnybonz, which look and taste like miniature ribs, using tender, lean pork that's prepared by cooking up regular ribs beneath a shrink ray. In 2008, their dedication to each dish caused Cityvoter's users to name Park Avenue BBQ the best barbecue in town.
