Martial-arts virtuoso and instructor James Sherman earned an official certification from the revered Israeli Krav Maga Association after completing more than 500 hours of close-quarters combat training in Israel. Sherman, who has received attention from Time Out New York, leads groups and individuals?including executives and celebrities such as magician David Blaine, singer-songwriter John Mayer, and BBC America president Herb Scannell?through the rigorous self-defense regimen, which includes potent kicks, punches, strikes, and chokeholds designed to ward off bullies, violent attackers, and amorous ivy vines. His team of distinguished instructors include Lalo Roberti, a SEAL Team 10 operative in operation Red Wings?the Marcus Lattrell Lone Survivor story?and Paul Zukowski, a world heavyweight champion in Barknuckle MMA. In addition, Sherman illustrates how Krav maga's cardiovascular intensity can bolster students' strength, speed, and flexibility.
Classes include a Combat Athlete class designed for any fitness level. This class has an introduction to Navy SEAL history, philosophy, and mental toughness; an introduction to Krav Maga and hand-to-hand combat, history, and philosophy. The instructors go over operation Red Wing in four parts, followed by q&a sessions; the fundamentals of Basic Underwater Demolition training and preparation, and training for baseline Navy SEALs physical fitness and readiness test in two parts. The team teaches SEALs leadership and team building physical training, all accompanied by before pictures to track an individuals progress.

After fist-punching his way through the U.S. Army's basic training program, bobbing and weaving through an amateur boxing career, and drop-kicking every last test that stood between him as his law degree, the poet-warrior Edward Rush opened a commercial gym in Washington, DC. He soon grew tired of folding towels for patrons who only wanted to use his gym as a place to read magazines or watch TV while they jogged, so he closed up shop, moved to NYC, and opened a personal-training gym and fitness laboratory. There, he earned the nickname "The Mad Scientist" for his grueling, inventive, and rewarding training method, called IFS.
For a quick, intense workout, students can turn to the gym's CrossFit classes. CrossFit incorporates a fusion of strength and cardiovascular conditioning exercises that grant bodies with sculpting, toning, and endurance-boosting benefits in less than an hour. In fact, many members hustle through the retinue of handstand pushups and Olympic-style power cleans on their lunch hours via the gym's power lunch program, which includes a paleo-diet meal delivery when the workout is completed. Whether over lunch, early in the morning, or at the end of an office day, students can attend classes up to six days a week and retire to well appointed locker rooms equipped with showers, towel service, and complimentary grooming products.
When Rick Rugg and Bob Schiffhauer founded the first of their gyms in 1980, they chartered their gym around three values: service, cleanliness, and having owners operate their own facilities. True to the founders' original vision, each location's employees strive to keep their cardio and resistance equipment spic and span as they care for facilities. In addition to personal training, instructors lead a schedule of more than 400 group fitness classes?including cycling, Kardio Kick, and Zumba?offered each week across their eight locations. At the clubs, trainers also help guests master CrossFit functional equipment and use TRX suspension training systems to help them connect with their vine-savvy pet orangutans.

Penfield Fitness and Racquet Club members make use of an endless supply of free weights and Technogym or Life Fitness cardio equipment equipped with TVs for personal viewing.
A team of trainers leads 99 group fitness classes each week, such as Zumba dance aerobics, Pilates, and yoga as well as nationwide programs including Les Mills and SilverSneakers.
