  • Baby Boot Camp
When Kristen Horler had her first child in 2001, it seemed as if she would never trim down to her pre-baby body. Try as she might, she couldn't find a workout that did the job, unless it involved hiring an expensive personal trainer, purchasing a gym membership, or convincing Atlas to abandon his post for a few hours. So she decided to create her own mom-friendly workout that would not only help other new moms tone their bodies, but also offer them a strong support system. Horler drew upon the knowledge she gained working as a former personal trainer and group-fitness instructor and competing as a triathlete to create Strollfit classes. During these 60-minute boot-camp classes, moms exercise alongside their stroller-bound children, performing strength-building exercises, cardio drills, and stretching maneuvers. Strollga fitness classes take moms through yoga poses, often using the stroller as a prop, and four-week Nutrition Solutions programs teach clients how to make small lifestyle adjustments to shed excess pounds.

  • Pleasant Hill Recreation & Park District
Pleasant Hill Recreation & Park District gives families all the motivation they need to get outside for open-air fun. The park district puts youngsters on the path to athleticism and good sportsmanship with youth sports leagues, including soccer, flag football, and karate. Adults can even get in on some old fashioned, friendly competition in leagues of their own, feeling the satisfaction of connecting with a kickball or the sense of accomplishment in lawfully taking possession of your opponent’s 401K by stealing his flag football flag. Aquatic aspirations take shape at the community pool, which offers public swimming, swim lessons, summer camps, and a place for rubber duckies to live out their retirement in peace. For more intellectually oriented endeavors, kids and adults can sign up for a slew of classes, such as art, dance, and music. In addition to homegrown activities, the park district organizes adult field trips to far-flung locales. You can register for an Alaskan cruise, a railroad trip through the Colorado Rockies, or a safari in Kenya.

  • Zumba Contra Costa
Janice Litvin has spent her whole life dancing. She trained with Michael Peters, the director of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and "Beat It" videos. She also studied dance with Patsy Swayze—Patrick Swayze's mom, who taught a variety of dance styles. For the past four years, Janice has been teaching dance fitness classes as the mobile instructor behind Zumba Contra Costa. Her résumé bears five certifications: four for Zumba and one for group exercise from the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. Both her knowledge and her star-studded past caught the attention of Z-Life magazine, a quarterly Zumba Fitness publication, and landed her a spot on its cover. She fell for Zumba because it feels more like a dance party than a workout. By blending international styles of music and dance ranging from salsa to belly dance, she helps her students burn calories while having fun.

More challenging classes are available, too, such as the Upama yoga course for aspiring teachers.
