  • Lashfully
Quilted stools standing before curved mirrors, plush curtains cordoning off treatment rooms, all lend an air of 1940s glam to Lashfully's eyelash salon. The lash artists – at this highly praised salon – work to lend their clients the same glamorous air, with lush synthetic mink eyelash extensions to enhance their eyes. Co-owner and head artist Liv Contreras trains each artist herself to artfully customize each client's lash extensions from a selection of 100 styles, differing in length, thickness, or curvature. Just like a middle school couple, natural lash and extension stay together for two to four weeks, until the native lash grows out naturally. Because of this, touchups are recommended every few weeks.

Barber Poles: An Iconic Symbol with Grim Origins Outside old-fashioned barbershops spins the familiar red, white, and blue stripes of the barber’s pole. Join Groupon as we shave off the history surrounding the pole’s origins. For many, an old-fashioned barber shop is filled with nostalgia, taking them back to decades when gentlemen spent a few minutes every day getting their sideburns shaped and stubble shaved. But the iconic spiraling sign outside harkens back to an even older time when Europeans spent their time getting their skin slashed. In the Middle Ages, barbers also functioned as surgeons, performing such pseudo-medical tasks as bloodletting. That practice—which involved cutting patients’ arms to counteract the imbalance of blood in their body—was as popular as it was misguided and gruesome, and barbers were one of the few professions up to the task. After the patient had bled (and fainted), the barber would wash the bandages and hang them to dry on a wooden post outside. The poles were often painted red to hide the bloodstains, and the wind twisted the bandages around it, forming a red-and-white spiral that doubled as an advertisement for anyone else in need of a bloodletting—or a shave and a haircut. By the year 1540, the barber’s pole became an official symbol designating a member of the United Barber-Surgeons Company in England. However, it was medical surgeons who had red-and-white poles—barbers substituted blue instead of red. Eventually, barbers gave up bloodletting but retained their spinning sign and, at least in the United States, gained another color in return. Most poles in America today sport red, white, and blue—a reflection of the nation’s flag, which itself represents George Washington’s favorite Skittles.

  • Diva Nail Lounge
If you walked into Diva Nail Lounge with a blindfold on, your nose might mistake the salon for a farmers market. The scents of mint, papaya, chocolate, and avocado drift through the space, wafting from natural scrubs and masks. Feet steep in milk baths dappled with rose petals and slices of citrus fruits, and lavender and rose essential oils condition cuticles. Technicians aren't employing the organic ingredients for their aromas alone—they choose them for their nourishing properties, such as antioxidants that combat aging and proteins that hydrate the skin. The technicians' devotion to earth-friendly formulas is matched by their commitment to hygiene. The salon doesn't stock spa chairs because of sanitary concerns, and the staff throws away disposable tools after a single use. For example, during each Diva house treatment, techs buff calluses with a new pumice stone. To preserve more durable utensils, they sterilize their surfaces with hospital-grade treatments. The menu covers luxurious mani-pedi services and add-ons that range from paraffin dips to peppermint clay masks. Treatments typically culminate in vibrant coats of nail polish, including the hues of SpaRitual nail lacquer—shades that avoid synthetic dyes in favor of all-natural colors harvested from the inside of kaleidoscopes.

  • Spa Radiance Medical
Five Things to Know About Spa Radiance Since it opened in 1976, Spa Radiance has received attention from the likes of InStyle, The San Francisco Chronicle, and The New York Times. Read on to find out what makes the spa so appealing: The owners are third- and fourth-generation aestheticians. Mother-daughter duo Galina Rovner and Angelina Umansky have run the business since its inception, making a name off their combination of Old World skincare treatments and modern med-spa services. Allure and Refinery29 herald the spa’s services. Allure named it the best spot for bronzing as well as the best place in the US to get a facial, while Refinery29 called out it’s weird and luxurious facials. High-tech treatments can be found in the separate med-spa side of the business. Here, clients will find treatments such as laser hair removal, IPL photofacials, and Botox injections. It’s situated in a renovated Victorian home. And homey it is. The most recent renovation outfitted the spa with original artwork, custom light fixtures, hardwood floors, and heated treatment beds made in France. Don’t be surprised if some star power rubs off on you. The salon has seen its fair share of celebrity clientele over the years including Michelle Pfeiffer and Mary J. Blige.
