Being a vegetarian can be hard, thankless work—extended family members rarely understand, many restaurants don't accommodate you, and cows still try to devour you every chance they get. Today's Groupon proves that vegetarian eating can be stylish, sexy, and delicious: for $12, you get $25 worth of seasonal organic fare at Café Green in Dupont Circle. This Groupon is valid for dine-in meals at Café Green only, and it is not redeemable at its sister eatery, Java Green.
Java Green founder D J Kim, Café Green’s general manager Jimmy Cooney, and chef David Duffy founded the café on the concept of providing fresh, healthy, and accessible fare for vegans, vegetarians, and carnivorous converts alike. The menu runs the gamut of faux-meat flavors and raw, garden-plucked goods. Sandwiches include the Free Bird Che, which consists of soy chicken breast, vegan cheese, roasted red pepper, and spicy chili java sauce ($8). Unmodified pairings, such as the Raw Trio—mango kale salad, seaweed salad, and kimchi ($15)—and generously portioned entrees, such as the Gnocchi Arrabiata—dumplings doused in a spicy tomato sauce and served with sautéed broccoli and vegan cheese ($13)—or the mac and cheese, with an almond-based "cheese" sauce, served with sautéed cale and candied yams ($12), are also available.
Leaving no sweet tooth unsatisfied, Café Green’s kitchen also outputs slices of raw cheesecake ($8 each) and Virgil's root beer floats ($5 each), as well as rich fruit blends such as the mango colada ($10) and coconut chai ($9). The café serves up delicious edibles for lunch and dinner Tuesday–Saturday; on Sundays, the chefs roll out a brunch menu like a red carpet made of green grass that has been naturally dyed red using organic raspberry juices (Café Green also offers "lite fare" and dinner menus on Sundays).
This Groupon is available for redemption beginning Monday, October 4.
- I first went to Cafe Green near Dupont Circle just weeks after they opened in April and immediately fell in love! This cozy new place is a cafe downstairs and sit-down restaurant upstairs. – All Naturale
- While the menu might not appeal to everyone, I would encourage you to let Cafe Green shatter your preconceptions about vegan food. I think your tastebuds might be pleasantly surprised. – Two DC
