  • Breathworks Cpr®
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition? BreathWorks CPR offers fun, state of the art CPR/First Aid training that is designed for the everyday person. The classes are creative and interactive. The student will complete the class feeling comfortable and confident in performing CPR. Do you provide any materials? What should your students expect to bring? We provide the books and a two-year certification card upon completing the course. Students need to bring a pen and a smile. What was the inspiration to start or run this business? CPR is such a scary and dry subject at times. I wanted to provide an atmosphere where one can take such a serious subject and have fun learning it. I wanted to prove that CPR is for everyone not just for the professional rescuers, but everyone. What do you love most about your job? What I love most about this job is watching people's faces once they realize, "Wow, I can do this" and "Wow, this was fun". I love making something serious fun and seeing my students enjoy their learning experience.

  • Aspire Education
Aspire Education believes that education is the cornerstone of community. Aspire trains students to attain it through a dual curriculum of private tutoring for students, regardless of their ability to pay, and afterschool study halls and test-prep classes for groups. Professional tutors work with youth in a variety of subjects, including math, chemistry, writing, and foreign languages. But these lessons go beyond basic study sessions—tutors build relationships with students while teaching them about mitochondria and how to craft a persuasive argument. Their primary mission, along with helping kids succeed in school, is to transform them into lifelong learners and to inspire new educators. For the past two decades, Aspire's community reading-buddies program has also been leading the charge for education by working to improve literacy rates. Through this program, high-school and middle-school students receive pedagogical training and act as one-on-one mentors for preschoolers, blending reading activities and games into regular lessons. • Best in Class Education Center
Since 1995, Best in Class Education Center's instructors have aided students of all ages—from pre-K tots to high school seniors—in their academic journeys. They calibrate small-group and private math and English lessons that push each student at an individualized pace, helping struggling students catch up to speed or edifying advanced pupils seeking more of a challenge. The tutors give homework assignments for the kids to work on throughout the week, as well as administer weekly tests to assess their progress. In addition to boosting success in current classes, the staff helps older students ready themselves for post-secondary schooling with SAT prep classes and college admission workshops, which help applicants decide on the right place, craft an impressive personal statement, and shimmy into their dream school's mascot costume before campus visits.

  • K to College
Pairing their civic-mindedness with a strong business sense, a group of University of California, Berkeley, students grabbed a laptop and a borrowed pickup and began delivering school supplies to underserved students across the region. Today, the nonprofit, K to College, distributes the resources students need to excel in school and attain a solid education. This nonprofit approach enables them to provide three dollars of supplies to disadvantaged kids for every dollar donated to K to College. Collaborating with local businesses, K to College creates grade-appropriate supply kits. Packed in a sturdy canvas tote bag, school supply kits of pencils, papers, and dental-care items go to public-school students in the free or reduced-price lunch program; alternatively learning kits are packed in pre-k back-packs. K to College also advertises back-to-school efforts through local TV stations and works with the Folsom State Prison to organize community-service opportunities for inmates as part of a rehabilitation program—an effort that caught the attention of CNN.
